WHO does not assess metapneumovirus as global pandemic risk

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a common respiratory virus, said the World Health Organization (WHO) Office in Azerbaijan in response to APA's inquiry.

It was noted that the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention provides weekly reports on seasonal influenza-like illnesses: "The latest data (January 9, 2025) shows that despite seasonal increases, the number of cases of the virus this year is lower than the same period of last year. hMPV is spread primarily through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, through direct contact with an infected person, or by touching contaminated surfaces. In most cases, symptoms are mild and similar to those of the common cold. However, young children, people with weakened immune systems, and the elderly, especially those with existing lung conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or emphysema, may be at greater risk of severe outcomes."

WHO recommends following simple but effective preventive measures to prevent the spread of the virus and reduce the risk:

• Stay home: Avoid going to work or public places if you feel sick;

• Wear a mask: Wear a mask in close contact with people or in poorly ventilated areas;

• Sneeze and cough etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow;

• Wash your hands frequently: Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub.

The WHO Azerbaijan Office also stated that the current observation of the virus in various nearby countries is mainly a seasonal increase and should not be considered a global pandemic risk at this time: "Local health authorities and the public should consider simple preventive measures to prevent this virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) uses various systems to monitor the global spread of influenza and other respiratory viruses. Through this system, it collects data from laboratories and health organizations to track the spread of viruses. In addition, WHO's special programme on influenza is collaborating with Member States, regional offices and partner organizations to monitor disease tendencies, identify emerging strains and provide guidance on vaccination."
