PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs to visit Georgia

Claude Kern and Edite Estrela, co-rapporteurs for Georgia from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, will carry out a fact-finding mission to Tbilisi next week to assess the country’s compliance with its obligations and commitments as a CoE member state, the PACE press office announced on Friday, APA reports.

During the trip scheduled between January 14 and 16, the officials will meet with the leadership of all main political parties, Government officials and institutions, as well as civil society and the international community.

The PACE clarified it was a regular monitoring visit and “should not be considered as political support for the legitimacy or the views of the interlocutors” its representatives planned to meet, amid ongoing protests in the country against the Government's decision last year not to include the European Union accession talks in its agenda until 2028 and claims by the domestic opposition that the October 26 general elections last year had been “rigged”.

The co-rapporteurs intend to visit some of the detained protesters whose charges and detention have raised concerns, the PACE press office added.
