Azerbaijan reports first case of monkeypox virus

A 22-year-old Azerbaijani citizen traveled to a foreign country for tourism from January 2 to January 11, 2025, and a few days after returning, sought medical attention at one of the clinics operating in Baku with complaints of fatigue, fever, blister-like rashes in the genital area, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle pain, says the joint statement made by the Ministry of Health and TABIB, APA reports.

An infectious disease specialist, based on the patient’s symptoms, suspected monkeypox virus infection and after collecting the patient’s medical history, it was determined that they had traveled to another country and had contact with an individual with rashes during the trip.

The presence of an epidemiological link along with the symptoms provided grounds for laboratory testing, and the results of a PCR test of a swab taken from the patient's rash in the laboratory were positive for the monkeypox virus.

The patient is currently hospitalized and receiving treatment under hospital conditions.

Since the patient’s family members, who were in contact with them, show no signs of illness, they have been placed under home observation by outpatient medical facilities and sanitary-epidemiological service workers in the area. They have been prescribed preventive treatment and supplied with medications.

Treatment and observation measures for the patient and their contacts will continue until the incubation period of the disease ends.
