Armenian political scientist: New agreement between US, Armenia won't provide security guarantees

The strategic partnership agreement to be signed between Yerevan and Washington does not imply strategic allied relations similar to US-Israel or US-UK relationships, political scientist and head of the Armenian Center for American Studies Suren Sargsyan wrote on social media, Olaylar informs via Armenian media.

"The US is not providing Armenia with any security guarantees, not transferring military aid, not selling or transferring weapons and ammunition as assistance. This format does not involve establishing an American military base or stationing military representatives in Armenia," wrote the expert, also reminding that a similar document was signed between the US and Georgia in 2009.

In terms of security, the agreement provides for assistance through consulting programs, military-to-military contacts, military education and participation in international educational programs, as well as continuation of long-term cooperation with the Kansas National Guard, the expert writes.

Under the agreement, the US will provide financial assistance in the areas of economy and reforms, social projects, and human rights.

The document also covers energy cooperation - most likely involving the construction of American small nuclear power plants in Armenia.

However, one of the main questions is whether the implementation of the agreement will continue under the administration of US President-elect Donald Trump.

Sargsyan considers this question the most difficult, and he believes it depends on the effectiveness of Armenian diplomacy.
